The History of Super 8

Super 8 film, a motion picture format released in 1965, has an enduring charm that has captivated generations. The film is 8mm wide, which is where it gets its name, and it was initially designed as a silent film. However, later advancements allowed for sound integration, making it even more versatile. Many families in the 60s and 70s used Super 8 cameras to document some of life’s most precious moments, creating a treasure trove of nostalgic memories captured on film. The grainy, warm aesthetic of Super 8 footage evokes a sense of intimacy and nostalgia, which is why so many couples and photographers/videographers love and continue to use it.

Why I Love Super 8

There’s something uniquely enchanting about using Super 8 film to capture a wedding day or love story. It feels more approachable and casual, allowing for a candid, documentary style that doesn’t require a huge setup. The aesthetic of film feels so warm and personal, almost tangible, providing a sense of timelessness and authenticity. Super 8 is perfect for creating a highlight reel of your wedding day, capturing snippets from each part of the day. Imagine getting ready with your friends, seeing your partner for the first time, laughing and having fun with your loved ones, sharing your first kiss, and dancing the night away—all preserved in a beautifully nostalgic format. Super 8 film transforms these moments into a visual narrative that feels both genuine and heartfelt.

Super 8 Wedding Video’s I’ve Created

I’ve had the pleasure of shooting various weddings and elopements on Super 8 film, and each experience has been uniquely magical. For instance, I captured Anna and Tom’s beachside wedding, where the Super 8 film perfectly complemented the relaxed, bohemian vibe of their celebration. The grainy, sunlit footage of their vows and the joyful moments shared with their guests felt like a dream. Another memorable experience was capturing Emily and James’ vintage-themed elopement in a charming old theater. The Super 8 film added an authentic touch to their nostalgic setting, creating a wedding video that felt like a timeless piece of cinema. These experiences have reinforced my love for Super 8 and its ability to create wedding videos that are not just recordings but true works of art.
